Dylan Pours Out His Soul
No Rating
This is a terrific full-gospel album. Dylan holds nothing back, and sings from the heart on every number here. Highlights:
The wonderful opener Satisfied Mind (it's a cover, and not a Dylan original),
What Can I Do For You? (with it's terrific harp solo),
Pressing On - Fantastic gospel groove
In The Garden, Covenant Woman and Saving Grace.
Does anyone know that Dylan played harp on the late Keith Green's Gospel album, "So You Wanna Go Back To Egypt?" Can't remember the song, but the harmonica playing is reminiscent of "What Can I Do For You?"
Does anyone recall the story behind the changing of the album cover? The first album cover featured a painting of God's big hand reaching down to a crowd of hands reaching up. I actually like both covers, but the original on an LP would be a collector's item now. I used to have it, then I switched to CDs and got rid of all my LPs. Bad move, I guess.
Keep on keeping on ...
Canute - take it easy, but take it!
Saved was condemned by all and sundry ... from the songs to the cover ... Shame, shame ... it has proved to be one of my favourites Bob Albums ... honest, steadfast ... always worth getting out and playing again.
Yep, among his best

I remember not long after this album came out Dylan tried to have it recalled. I think the reason given was that he didn't like how it sounded on the radio. But, fact is this album has more energy than anything he'd done before or has done since and is one of my favorite albums by any artist. It's hard to really compare to any other Dylan album, but the one or two following it come close.

An excellent album
This is one of the best gospel albums ever made ,no kidding. It have some songs that sound like they have always been there like Saved, Are you ready? or In the garden . The lyrics articulate very well the faith that Dylan is trying to express and are really outstanding. I think this album is unfairly underrated.I even could not find it some years ago in the shops and have to ask it to a foreign cd shop , why ?
If you someday can hear "Are you ready ?" by a gospel chorus then one begin to understand the power of the Dylan songs in this album.
Beautiful album, to say the
Beautiful album, to say the least
behold the power of god
At some points this album makes me want to be black and go to church every sunday! The musicians had been playing the songs live before going to the studio, so they play them perfectly. Slow train has the advantage of the studio and Saved has all the energy of a live show. It's powerful and honest.
Remix and remaster: When?
No Rating
There have been few Dylan albums that have cried out for a remixing and remaster like this one, but for some reason many others have received such treatment while "Saved" remains neglected. I'm sure it would be at least as revelatory as the remix of "Street Legal" was. I think the material on this album is very strong -- glorious, in fact -- but I think that something is weak about the sound itself. Certainly on my CD version, there is a kind of distance or muffled effect, or at least that's the best way I can describe it. Jeff Rosen, Columbia, et al: Fix it, please!
Better than Slow Train
I prefer Saved over Slow Train.
But like Blonde on Blonde, skip the first song...A Satisfied Mind is the weakest song on a great experience!
Pressing On
This album probably should get a lot more credit than it does. Pressing On is incredibly powerful to me.

the gospel songs of bob dylan

I listened to "The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan" CD last night, the CD of cover versions from Saved and Slow Train sung by some of the stars of today's gospel music scene.
It is a really good CD. you can tell the artists put alot of thought and care into that CD. Excellent vocals and musicianship, and other testament to the growing recognition of Bob's gospel songs. One day some of these songs will take their place along all-time gospel standards like "Take My Hand,Precious Lord"
yet to have its day in the sun

i think that the so-called Dyaln gospel material will eventually take its place along side his great work.
part of the reason this has not happened is the "hang over" effect from when Dylan was labelled a born-again christian.
the part alot of people dont get is that dylan wasnt working out of a "born again" bag, he was working out of a "gospel" bag- meaning that in the same way his early material had roots in traditional folk music, so his gospel music had roots in early american gospel music, ie church music.
now that 30 years have passed and we can objectively view this music we start to realize that some of it is every bit as classic as his other work.
put it this way- if sony decided to release a compilation(i wish they would) which featured the greatest songs recorded between 1979- 1984 it would be an OUTSTANDING collection.
check out my playlist to see what I mean.
this is the thing about bob- he is in many ways the most diverse artist in popular music- folk, rock, gospel, country, roots, swing you name it he has done it
It does so much for me....
Whenever I start having doubts about my faith and don't know what to do about it I just listen to "Solid Rock" and "Pressing" on, and it makes me feel so much better. People can bash it all they want to, but gospel Dylan works for me.
his most under-rated album
No Rating
this is definitely his most under-rated album. the song "I'm standing on a solid rock made before the foundation of the world" is one of his most powerful recordings. an amazing song and performance.
"What can I do for you" is outstanding, a great track. excellent harmonica, among the finest he recorded.
the album gets a bit weak once you hit "In the garden", but give a close listen to the final track "Are you ready?"- very funky and well recorded track- they used it nicely in the I'm Not There film.
Covenant Woman is also a great song.
this record is dope i dont
this record is dope i dont care what anyone says
yo, you dont like it then you must have a hearing problem

Preacher DeeWeese: I think you thought I was critizising it for being religious. It's not a problem for me (but I know for other people is). I was critizising it because I think it's not well done. I said it doesn't sound as good as it could and many songs are too simple. Might be it's not my kind of music, but I express my musical opinion. Note how I rated Slow train coming and Shot of love.
You don't have to jump no pews...
A polarizing work, to be sure. "Saved" is a hand-clapping, church revival boogie. "Covenant Woman" is "Precious Angel Revisited". "Pressing On" is a Gospel classic. Bob is writing for the Church here with hit-or-miss results. I'm not going to tell you that it's the best thing he's ever done, but time has been kind to this work and it's not nearly as reviled as it once was.
There has to be a dullness of hearing

The content is great on this album. You obviously just don't have a taste for this kind of music..but then you are more than likely unsaved.
This is Saved.
Impossible to forget it's religious
This is THE gospel album. Musically it's absolutely church gospel. Lyrically it's like hearing a preacher. Lyrics aren't well done as in Slow train coming and they absolutely lack of any interest. The problem with music is the bad recording. As Slow train coming sounds great, how can it sound so bad? Covenant woman and What can I do for you are tunes that I like, but the overall is poor.
Saved
Most people see Saved and Slow Train Coming as two sides to the same coin. And while they may share a common lyrical focus, for my money Slow Train Coming has a lot more in common with its predecessor, Street Legal, than it does with Saved. Looking past the words, Slow Train Coming’s songs sound a lot Street Legal’s. They’re basic pop-rock songs with the same basic arrangement of horns and backing singers. Sure you’ve got Jerry Wexler doing a much better job recording it, and Mark Knopfler adding some more zing on the guitar, but really it always sounded like Bob just added the word Jesus to whatever songs he was working on at the time of his conversion. Really, Saved is the first of the quote-unquote born again albums that really sound like it. The music here is Gospel. I don’t get why Slow Train Coming is always more respected than Saved either. I mean if the Jesus words bother you, you’re not getting much help from either album. I think at the time, Slow Train Coming was seen as a weird one-off diversion, but the fear with Saved was that this would be all that Bob would sing about from here on out. Plus with the music so clearly Gospel, it’s harder to pretend that the lyrics aren’t really so dogmatic. I think the two are just about equal in terms of quality. I love the extended genre exercise into the Gospel milieu. The title track, as well as “Solid Rock” really rock out. “A Satisfied Mind” is a slip, but a brief one. “Covenant Woman” is really the only bad song on here. It’s a solid uncompromising album.
Wonderful Album!
This is my favorite album Bob did. Some people have attacked it because they are contrary to the gospel message. The record company really made a terrible mistake not to throw a lot more support behind this one. Even the album cover was changed.
Looks like a whole bunch more people need to get saved!
This is the best!
One of Bob's Best
Folks that hate the fact that Dylan bended his knee to Jesus love to trash this album... But don't believe the negative reviews. This album is awesome. Sure, it's different than 'Blood on the Tracks' or 'Blonde on Blonde'. It's a straight-up gospel-rock album, full of passion. So open your mind and your heart and hang on for some solid rock!
