Anybody want to gang up and go north for the last of the tour?

No Rating

Hey people,
I saw him in Tulsa a week or two ago and was freakin' blown away. I'd like to carpool and chip in and take a trip up north for one of his last shows. A marathon drive, just up and back. Crash after the show and drive straight through, tag team. Anybody interested wardsmith@phoenixcomm.us

i really enjoyed the opener of pillbox hat - could tell right away it would be a good night vocally. never get tired of hearing dont think twice. a solid rendition and great vocal from what i remember.

i must say that the real highlight of the night and one of the most incredible bob moments i've ever had was when they played the new song "forgetful heart". bob really seemed to be connecting with the lyrics - i'll never forget the sight of him center stage with the harp and that light shining from underneath him - casting a big shadow.

one of my favorite moments from any show by any artist.

A Taste of Things to Come?

Wow! Lots of different perspectives! Reminds me of a new venue in Mission Valley (SD) where Bob played a year or two ago that people weren't familiar with. it wasn't a ballpark, but it was blazing hot and we camped out all day in line. When it was time to go in, we had to run like scalded apes to get to the front! People who brought blankets were upset that others at the rail were blocking their view and they were forced to stand! A woman at the rail actually lit a sparkler and wanted to pass it down the line! Security took it away and she was lucky not to be evicted! I make it clear to anyone I go with to a Dylan concert: if we get separated, we meet up after the show at the pre-designated area. I will NOT leave my spot at the rail! I had one friend who was a little too high to be in the tight quarters of the stage area and she almost passed out. I am the most conciliatory of friends anywhere except at a Dylan concert. If you have to pee, or puke, or get a beer, etc., you are on your own! Those who know me know this and agree to the parameters.

We must keep in perspective that Bob almost stopped touring in the 80's due to his admitted inability to connect with his own songs. He was making himself sick trying to get through each concert. The only way he was able to reconnect was to rearrange the tempo, beat, and delivery of each song. At 68 years old, the constant touring has got to be taking it's toll on him. Other acts tour whenever they feel like it, give the people what they want and then go home with their paycheck. For Bob, touring is his JOB, and he is out there for most of the year, trying to keep it interesting. It's true, any concert you see may be his last, so go no matter what! He has waited his entire life to develop the croaky, raspy "black bluesman's" voice that he sings with now. We may not like it, but it is authentic and pure Bob.

Allison, are you a reporter or journalist? Your description of the concert was so visual, I could almost close my eyes and see it! Thank you!

Paula, Are you following the tour? Your descriptions are wonderful, as well, and give me insight as to how I will arrange my itinerary for the Stockton show. Thank you!

I'm hoping for "Life is Hard", and "This Dream of You" and "Jolene" and "Houston" and "Shake, Shake, Mama". . . . . .actually, I don't care what he chooses to play or how he chooses to play it, because I know the whole experience will be another precious memory that I will look back fondly upon when I'm 90 years old! "In Bob we Trust! Got Dylan?"

Not Asking for a totally New Experience Every Day

No Rating

Just looking for something with a bit more emotion in it.

Now, before I get all sorts of hate mail and angry responses from people I feel I have to point out that I have worshiped Bobby for years. Absolutely.

I ask you to take a look at the set list from the next concert after Ripken Stadium. It's not only eerily similar, it's about the same.

Now, please understand I'm not looking for a fight. The response was that we, the fans, are demanding all the oldies (Rolling Stone, Watchtower, and the likes) but what I'm saying is that maybe we, the fans, aren't looking for that at all. Maybe we want the Jokerman, the Covenant Woman and the like.

Just maybe?

And to top that off, in response to the assertion that Bobby's just playing what it is we want to hear, and that he would rather play something else I say - get real. Bob's probably only done 5 things in his entire life that he didn't want to do. If he didn't want to play these same songs night after night after night he wouldn't.

And that's what's hardest for me.

Bobby was terrific!

The crowd was lame. The sound could have been better, too.

Did you ever think that by purchasing a ticket, it does not guarantee you a totally unique experience every time relative to the set list? Here's a hint...if you demand a different aural experience every time, just put your IPOD on shuffle and go sit under a tree someplace. You obviously have the bucks to follow Bob around...why can't you just be satisfied with that instead of bitching that he's not mixing things up enough for you?

RE: Is the list of band members posted anywhere?

I'd like to know this too? Anyone know?

I like this comment from Robert Young! Amen -

"Keep rollin' Bob! You have to be one of the hardest working men in the business! This show was like the Ironman of Rock n' Roll in the house that the Ironman of Baseball built".

A holes will be A holes - but Bob was stellar!

Lysergic, Randy, whoever - Sorry you had a rough time at the show. Yes, drunks will be drunks - whether swaying to Bobby D or catching Celine Dion. I didn't think this show had anymore than your regular share for any outdoor summer concert - and I honestly would think a few less than most. I really enjoyed the family vibe - even down on the field except for up real close. As to your comments below... I really like it when scurity is laid back and not bothering folks who aren't bothering others. Sorry, but my simple advice is, if you don't like drunks stay back in the crowd or don't go. I've encountered many at many shows and have always found a way to scoot along and find another viewing place - especially at a GA show.

The show itself? Missed Willie :-( Rain, traffic, and a travelling companion that got stuck at work got us there a bit late. John Cougar Mellonball was good with moments of greatness. Nothing too special imho - but enjoyable and a good warm up.

Dylan? FANTASTIC. Have seen him some 20 or 30 times over the years and think this show was a good one. Maybe not the absolute best - but well worth attending. All was good, but my personal favs were; Don't think Twice, Highway 61, Its allright Ma & Thunder. The band was tight & seemed into it for most of the show and Dylan was awesome - even boogieing at his piano from time to time.

Parking at this venue was horrendous! Don't think they are ready for crowds of this size. but, we enjoyed the long walk down and back up to parking from the stadium - so OK by me.

If you get the chance - see this show while he's still doing the baseball field circuit. Good tunez, great crowd (in my opinion), and a SUPER TIME! Can't think of many better ways to spend a summer evening.

Don't think twice - It's mighty all right

Regrettable, for all those who experienced the drunk and disorderly situation.

I wonder about serving beer at these events, because there are always going to be people who can't handle it. Through Willie Nelson's set, I was next a couple (well over the drinking age) who were drinking and handling it pretty well. They had a room next to the stadium for the night so they would not have to worry about driving home. I was driving home and I was not drinking. We got along just fine.

After Willie's set and the rain, I was pretty much all over the stadium and down on the field, and was on the field for the first half of Dylan's set. I saw a lot of people drinking (and doing other things), but no one out of control. I have been to other shows like this, and not seen any problems, and I like to wander around, not just sit in one place.

It seems to me that one solution is yours, no beer or alcohol at an all age show. It works at club shows. It would probably work at these concerts too. People might actually appreciate the music more. Or, you could cut off the beer and alcohol at a set time. I really like the all ages aspect, so I would like to preserve that.

It seems to me that there is an element of personal responsibility here. It is always difficult when a a few people are irresponsible and everyone has to pay the price of controlling this kind of thing. In America, of course, Bud is the King of Beers, and we push alcohol right and left, with just token warnings about acting responsibly. We really need to look at the societal need to get drunk.

Thoughts on The Bob Dylan Show

Love these ballpark shows. Liked Bob's Show in Frederick MD a couple years back so much that had to go see this one. Did Wilco in Wilmington on July 10. Wiyos was great. Too bad the rain trimmed off part of Willie Nelson's set. Nice that Bob brings along all this other talent. It is a show.

Bob and the band were hot, the sound, however, was not so hot. It was a muddy blur most of the time almost anywhere in the stadium. This is probably a price for doing these ballpark shows, and I will suffer that for an otherwise great time. Still, some consideration might be given to turning down the volume a bit and trying to get a better mix. Wiyos' and Willie Nelson's sets did not really suffer as much from muddled acoustics, but John Mellencamp's set had the same problem. The sound was actually much better in the parking lot outside the stadium.

Thought Bob was in great voice and did some interesting and beautiful versions of the songs. Enjoyed greatly that he played guitar on the first two songs. And his keyboard work was fine too. If the sound were better, people might have appreciated all of this more.

Is the list of band members posted anywhere?

Keep rollin' Bob! You have to be one of the hardest working men in the business! This show was like the Ironman of Rock n' Roll in the house that the Ironman of Baseball built.

Hello, The concert in Aberdeen MD. Was Horrible. I'm writing for the Aegis paper, here in Harford County MD. Thought I'd let you all know this... Do NOT GO if they are serving beer or booze. It was supposed to be an all ages show, NOT A BAR. People were extremely rude and puking on each other. I'll be telling EVERYONE to AVOID THIS SHOW LIKE THE PLAGUE, IF they sell BOOZE.
I'm so angry at the folks at Ripken Stadium. I am letting "Rolling Stone" know also. AND the photos I got from some people, one photo SHOWS A CHILD DRINKING A BEER OUT OF THE BOTTLE
I WAS LIVID, THERE WAS NO SECURITY THAT I COULD FIND NEAR THE CROWD AT THE STAGE EXCEPT A FEW UP AT THE STAGE. I Got out of there, and now it's up to me to let Harford County know this, and the photo of the little, little girl drinking BUDWISER.

I hope you had fun

Hello, I just wanted to say, the whole scene died in me that night. IT MAY AS WELL HAVE BEEN A KKK RALLY. I had wanted to see this show for as long as I knew about it. First My REAL friends were going to go, two had to work and my other two friends couldn't go because it was they're wives who had to work. Then I was sad because I couldn't get anyone to go, then my lover Jeff took off work that day, for me, so he could go. He's a classic Rock fan but not as deep into "everything" as I was. But, I didn't have enough $$$ for two tickets. So, through the grace of God I WON TICKETS on WRNR
103.1 in Annapolis. YEAH, it was like I was meant to be there. So
We go, I get extremely sunburned, I get screwed over by the "hippies" because of stupid, stupid booze. Everywhere!!! It was an all ages show, PEOPLE COULD HAVE WENT WITHOUT IT A FEW HOURS BUT THE $$$ BEING MADE FROM THAT SHIT, HOW COULD THEY SAY "NO" TO SELLING BEER. I'm going to make the biggest fart stink in HISTORY about this concert. The kids I saw, I saw a 10 or younger little kid, drinking out of a budwiser bottle!!!! To me it was ALTAMONT without the Hells Angels (no they were there, just not the motor cycle gang) and the bad acid. I hope you had fun. I lost hope, I don't EVER want to hear ANY music AGAIN, except LOUD TECHNO. THE COUNTER CULTURE, IT'S A LIE. FAKE, $$$money making lies.
Sorry to unload on you, hope you had fun and didn't get thrown up on by someone who didn't even say, "I'm Sorry" or her "friends, one of whom, smirked at me and laughed. I called her a C*NT and I don't know if she heard me but others did, looking at me as if I was the bad guy. I heard up to 8 of Dylan's songs then I left, and
as I tried to push my way through the crowd I found my friend, he was with some other "younger" couple, getting high. I decked him right in his eye then his mouth then his body, then I left him there.

Yeah I was there, saw Willie, he was real good, Then it Thunder stormed Then about 40 minutes later I saw Melloncamp, He was good. Then EVERYTHING CHANGED, DRUNKS WERE EVERYWHERE. I HATE BOOZE & PEOPLE ON IT. I GOT THREW UP ON BY SOME BLACK BITCH. EVERYONE HAD A CAMERA, BUT WE WERE TOLD NO CAMERAS like 5 times. SO, My friend who came with me also decided to ditch me, because he wanted to get high, or so he says. I bought the pig his ticket. I WAS ALONE, PUKED ON AND THE ONCE "HIPPIES" ACTING LIKE THE NATIONAL GUARD AT KENT STATE. "BLUE MEANIES IS MORE THE TERM. I'm 44 and grew up with COUNTER CULTURE ATTITUDE. IT WASN'T AT THAT CONCERT, JUST A BUNCH OF STUPID DRUNKS.
AND US POT SMOKERS, WE COULDN'T ENJOY OURSELVES. I'd CATCH A WHIFF OF SOME BUT NO I HAD THE WORST TIME OF MY LIFE. I FINALLY FOUND MY FRIEND AND LETS JUST SAY, HIS FACE ISN'T SO PRETTY. ALSO I GOT THERE AT 10:00A.M. They told us to stay in one line, so as the SUN BEAT DOWN ON ME ALL DAY, while my "friend" stayed in the air conditioning. Then around the time the gates were to open some asshole came out and told everyone to form another line, the one I was supposed to be in, SO, instead of being 10th, I suddenly became the 200th. It didn't matter(thank God) MY PROBLEM WAS WITH THE BEER. AND THE DRUNKEN FOOLS. THE OUTRAGEOUS PRICES, SCREW BOB DYLAN, SOMETHING HAPPENED TO ME FRIDAY NIGHT. MY LIFE HAS CHANGED. I DON'T CARE ABOUT PEOPLE ANYMORE. I WISH THEY WOULD DIE. AND I THINK THE WHOLE PEACE & LOVE THING THAT I SPENT MY WHOLE F**KING LIFE UPHOLDING, TURNED IT'S BACK ON ME LIKE THE ALTAMONT CONCERT(which I now understand more). I WOULD ADVISE, FIND OUT IF THEY ARE SERVING BOOZE AT THE NEXT SHOW...It GETS UGLY. AND SO WAS DYLANS VOICE. BLAA!

No Musician Likes to Play the Oldies

5

Regarding the comments about Bob just going through the motions in his encores, please know that no musician enjoys playing the overplayed ones from his or her past. "Like a Rolling Stone" and "All Along the Watchtower" are crowd favorites, not band favorites. They're doing them only as a favor to us. Were it up to them, they'd choose to do those songs about once a year -- not every show... but alas, "we" demand it of them. So, whether it's your local band cringing at the inevitable nightly requests for "Freebird" or "Sweet Home Alabama," or Bob recogninzing he has to do the old ones to keep the peace, please recognize their expressions of tedium and boredom are reflections not of the musicians, but of the songs they've had to live with for too long. Ricky Nelson wrote "Garden Party" just to explain this phenomenon.

Rolling Thunder Redux

Lightening, Thunder, Rain, and Look at the Sun Sinking Like a Ship --- We had it all when Wye Oak (Wiyo?), Willie, John-Boy, and Bob performed with their awesome bands at the Ironbird Stadium in Aberdeen, MD last night. Wye Oak warmed up the audience with bluesy jug-band numbers. A musical treat.
Willie's Whiskey River flowed in on a thunderhead, and lightening flashed in the distance as he and his band "effortlessly" performed many of their hits. Willie's voice was melodic and sweet as a nightengale. Sister Bobbie's Grand Piano was wrapped up from the rain by dedicated roadies as she played honkey-tonk, ragtime, and gospel. Mickey's harmonica punctuated Willie's vocals beautifully, despite the threat from the electrical storm. Stadium officials called the band to an early halt for safety and herded the crowd off the field. Willie's set cut short! (Oh how we missed Georgia!)
Thunder was still audible in the distance as fans ran back on the field to jostle for a front row position. Talk all around about anticipating Bob in the rain. A few fans took "shelter from the storm" under tarps and panchos, while the rest of us stood in the downpour hoping "the levee wouldn't break." It took a long while for the crew to get the stage back in shape for Mellencamp and Co., but it was worth the wait. John Mellencamp and his band surprised many in the crowd with their energetic stage performance. The band started off with a bit of a "we've done this before" vibe, but soon responded to the enthusiastic audience and the old familiar tunes sounded fresh. People cheered to John's new lyric that "your dream may be what saves us." Others sang along to the walls tumbling, tumbling. A rollicking good time.
As Mellencamp left the stage, the fan base shifted a bit, with many parents and young children making their way up front to get a glimpse of the legendary Bob Dylan. Many in the crowd were young teens and adults who talked as though they held the man in awe. One young man bowed to Bob when he took the stage. Other groupies were from older generations, but there was a "Bob" camaraderie which united the crowd during the long wait. These were folks who respected Bob's musical achievements and wanted to bask in his musical aura.
Bob and the talented musicians he's been playing with this decade played old and new tunes with joy and fervor. The band was TIGHT, and followed Bob's lead with rapt attention. Bob looked like he enjoyed being up there making music, and the crowd loved it. He's got the "blood of the land" in his voice. It was awesome to be in that "Bob" space with the tunes washing over us! Thank you BOB! You ROCK!

Setlist: Please Bury Me in a Pinebox 6 feet underground before an Angel flies too Low to the Ground and They Roll me out on Highway 61. I Feel a Change Comin' On.

Yes, Bob's harmonica playing seemed really expressive last night.

Forgetful Heart

4

I think Bob uses some idiosyncratic phrasing, especially on his older songs, so that he can emphasize the word of his choice in a given line... I'm guessing it's how he keeps himself interested so that he's NOT phoning it in.

Bob and his band really rocked, but for me, the highlight was a spellbinding performance of Forgetful Heart. I also enjoyed the nice people who were in the vicinity of our blanket for most of the show (about 40 yards straight back from center stage). We danced the night away.

Oh yes - the Wiyos really fit in nicely as openers. They have obviously spent some time researching vaudeville music of the '30s, and they got things off to a fun start.

dylan seems bored to me

No Rating

his songs are nearly unrecognizable through all the amplified noise. he is a bard and a poet who has lost his way.

i hope he comes back to us to share the strange beauty of his lyrics. i cannot recognize his current incarnation. it gets worse and more boring every year.

i think about half the audience left ripken stadium during dylan's set. both willie nelson and john mellencamp got far more cheers and applause. it makes me very sad to have dylan end on this note.

El Duderino - I've seen Bob in Shows where he seemed to be phoning it in. Last night, he was On The Stage! Even though he's playing the same songs at the end, he appeared to be making music w/his soul from where I was standing, which was up front. I've never had the pleasure of watching Bob perform from so close - He was communicating w/the band, rocking to the music, playing the keyboard and harmonica w/feeling, and smiling occasionally as he sang. He looked like he was enjoying himself. George Recile on drums and Donny Herron on steel guitar looked like they were w/Bob all the way. The others on guitar/bass looked like they were in and out, maybe feeling some of the repetitivness of being on the road playing the same songs, but the band members are not known for being expressive. They are outstanding musicians though, and they were TIGHT last night. The show ROCKED! The crowd around me was into the music and in the "Bob" groove.

Bob's Awesome, but...

5

I mean, am I the only one out there who thinks Bob's been 'phoning it in' this tour? Once he gets to Thunder on the Mountain, we all know how it's gonna end, and while he sometimes belts it out a little better than others, it's all about the same at the end. Honestly, once I heard the first chords of Thunder I lost interest... here we go, Rolling Stone, Jolene, then Watchtower.

It's been like that for far too long, and I wish he would open up to us a bit more with something different. Even the band lost interest towards the end.

Was it great? Of course, but I can't see myself continuing to follow him around for the same old stuff.

When I was following in South America last year the encores began to meld into a constant playlist, and it looks like he's written them in stone now.

I would be real interested to hear other people's opinions about this, please. And not replies that just go on and on about how great he is, I already know that. I'm looking for an open discussion about this, please.

Out.
