I'm assuming your comment was to me since I was the one who called them all legends and that I was supposedly "the little high school girl who was gushing with her new found freedom at her first Bob Dylan concert and who was OMG". First of all, don't you f***ing dare patronize or talk down to me! You don't know a damn thing about me. I'm nowhere near high school age (I'm 33) and I was expressing my God given right to review this concert the way I saw it. Is that okay with you?!

It was my first Dylan concert and I was happy and proud to be there. I'm sorry that I don't possess years and years of going to various concerts to compare this one to like I'm assuming you do. All I can do is appreciate that he's still touring and that I got the chance to see him. I can't do that with a lot of the artists I love; The Ramones, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, etc.

I've seen footage of past concerts that he has done and I wish I could have seen him back then, but unfortunately my time machine is in the shop. All I can do is be thankful he's still around and love the musician he is today. I don't have to go in with a "discerning ear", I'm not a f***ing music critic, just a die-hard fan. Get off your high horse with me.

Listen you f***ing degenerate, those were to Angela because she was signaling him to give them to her, okay? She has some personal memories connected with Willie and her grandmother, who just passed away a couple of weeks ago, thank you very much. If I were you, I'd watch who I was calling an idiot, @sshole! Don't like it, you know what you can kiss, kid! Twat!

My first time seeing Bobby in real life, and it almost seemed like maybe he wasn't really real. But when his shadowy figure appeared on stage, I couldn't hold back the tears

3 legends??

After reading all the comments of several people at the different venues, I was just going to let it slide. But then the little high school girl who was gushing with her new found freedom at her first Bob Dylan concert and who was OMG!! three legends in one day comment, I just have to log in and ask her and all the rest, can you not see the obvious difference between Willie's band and Bob's. Have you no shame? Willie mails it in every single time, he plays like he's singing to a bunch of kids at a family reunion or something, his band are the most talentless hacks ever to be lucky enough to be making a living. How many drummers do you know play with one snare and one cymbal? Willie, God bless him, is one of the best writers country music has ever had but he is not making it IMPORTANT! Dylan does! Dylan makes every song, every 'arrangement' count. There is a reason the band never takes his eyes off of him. You could play with Willie from the next room. His sister I am sure is a fine person but is she playing with 2 fingers or three. And that's fine if they can get the work, everybody has bills to pay but do not call him or his band GREAT on the same night Dylan plays.
And Melloncamp is radio, how many artist are breaking their necks to cover his material.
Ok, I've vented and I'm sorry if I upset anyone but there needs to be a discerning eye (ear) here and in the world of live music, there is karaoke and there is art. "Pick one or the other but neither are to be what they claim."

They're planting stories in the press. . .

First of all, the Wiyos were a mediocre band that had no business being there. I didn't sit in the blaring sun for five hours that day to see a group of gimmicky hacks.

Secondly, I'm apparently the "@sshole " who "got in front" of your whiny sister-in-law and stole the sunglasses that Willie supposedly threw to her. This is absolute bullcrap, as the sunglasses were heading in my direction, and I didn't have to move a single step to catch them. I simply had to grab them before they hit me. In fact, as I recall, the two of you reached over and pelted me with your arms in a pathetic attempt to snatch them out of my hand.

In the words of Bobby, "You're an idiot, babe: it's a wonder that you still know how to breathe."

My Very First Bob Dylan Concert!

5

The concert starts an hour after we were let into the venue and the opening act were these guys called the Wiyos. They sounded really great and very vaudevillian. Really cute too!

Now, after them Willie comes on stage and all I can say is WOW!! For a 75 year old guy, he sure was the life of the party! Everyone who pointed and waved at him, he pointed and waved back. Hell, the man even blew me a kiss and threw my sister-in-law Angela his red bandanna!! She would have gotten his sunglasses but some a**hole got in front of her and took them when he tossed them. He did a terrific set and I love his sister, Bobbie's, piano playing!! Now, I'm DEFINITELY a newly converted Willie Nelson fan!!

I was so sorry to see Willie go, but I was ready for the next act!! John Mellencamp played an energetic set but he seemed somewhat detached from the crowd. It was like he was singing at us instead of to us. He didn't really acknowledge the crowd and when he did, it was like he was talking to hear himself speak. I don't remember too much about his set, but I did call my mother so she could hear "Hurts So Good" like she wanted.

Now, here is the part you've been waiting for!!

The crew sets up Bob's equipment and you can start to smell the Nag Champa incense that he likes to burn before he performs. As soon as the house lights went out, every one went absolutely crazy!! I couldn't believe that I was here and in few minutes I was actually going to see BOB DYLAN in the flesh! Then, I saw a shadowy figure walk out on stage and I damn near fainted when I saw it put on it's hat!!! I went off like a siren with my screaming!! Then the intro started and I had to hold on to the railing to keep from falling over!! The intro ended, the music started and the stage lights went up and there he was... DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME PLAYING GUITAR!!!! :O

I swear to God if I walked forward in a straight line, I would have ran right into him!! He was singing "Cat's In the Well" and he was absolutely stunning!! He was wearing his usual black hat and suit but he was wearing a sparkling red shirt and he was wearing his rings. I was trying in vain to get his attention but I don't think he saw me. He was too into what he was doing. Being that close to him was truly a blessing from God, so I didn't mind all that!!

I couldn't help but smile every time he smiled or fixed his hair in the back. God, he's so cute when he does that! My heart almost burst out of my chest when he sang "Nettie Moore". I absolutely LOVE that song!! Along with that song, my favorite song from the set was "Lonesome Day Blues". OMG, he was kicking a** and taking names with that song!!!

I knew the night was coming to an end when he started doing "Like a Rolling Stone". I was so upset that it was almost over. He did "Jolene" and "All Along the Watchtower" and then... it was over. The house lights came up and there he was with the band taking his bows. I probably screamed the loudest and blew him a million kisses!! They walked off and that was it. My very first Bob Dylan concert, and I had the best time of my LIFE!!!!!!!!!! :D

Oh, and if last night wasn't trippy enough, guess what happened on the ride home? Me and Angela are on the interstate heading back to SC, when we see a whole lot of police cars on the interstate heading in the opposite direction. We were thinking the worst like a really bad pile-up, a manhunt or something to that effect. We start getting nervous wondering what could be so urgent that this many cops would be rushing to it?

Luckily it wasn't a pile-up or a manhunt.... IT WAS PRESIDENT OBAMA'S MOTORCADE!!!!! We forgot that he was doing a speech in Raleigh, NC today and it was all over the news!! I had to call my family because I couldn't believe it... three legends AND THE PRESIDENT?!! Holy s***!!!! LOL!!

Beautiful Park, Good Show

No Rating

I thought the Durham Bulls ballpark was beautiful and the sound in the bleachers was better than on the field. All the artist were good, but in my opinion, the highlight of the night was John Mellencamps acoustic solo. His whole show was very good and his band can wail, but I would love to see a whole show with him doing a strictly acoustic set.
Willie was very good and for his age, he is incredible. Such a tremendous work of fantastic material he can choose to play. He was by far the clearest and most understandable of the headliners.I enjoyed his set very much and I am not a huge Willie Nelson fan.
Bob Dylan's set was worth the price for "Don't Think Twice..." and "It's Alright Ma..." Both songs were incredible. I love the rockin' electric blues and his band was by far the best on stage last night. They were tight. I really don't care if he ever does another acoustic song in his life. I love that raw, bluesy feel he brought to the stage. I agree the words could be clearer, but it is Dylan. All in all, I would go again in a heartbeat.

First, I'm the one interested in the poster if it's still available. Sorry for the double post.

On the show, I'm a Dylan veteran. Been going to his gigs since the late 70s. Getting the sound right for an outdoor venue is not easy. I sat along the first base line and agree that the overall volume might have been turned down a bit and other elements (Dylan's keyboard especially) turned up.

That said, this was much better than the Dylan shows I've seen lately. As a big fan of Love and Theft, I dug the song selection. Clearly the high points were Lonesome Day Blues, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, If You Ever Go To Houston, and Nettie Moore which I thought transitioned well into Summer Days. No doubt, more casual fans longed for some earlier stuff, but aside from the tour standards, those fans got It's Alright Ma (I'm Only a Very Funky Version), Don't Think Twice, and Cat's in the Well. Everything was immediately identifiable to knowledgeable listeners, except maybe Beyond the Horizon which did not have the semi-tropical/Hawaiian feel of the studio version. Those who left early were either well into their hangovers or, like so many concert-goers these days, unable to sit still long enough to appreciate what was happening. So be happy. Besides, if you craved album perfect greatest hits, you had Mellencamp and Willie. For innovation and inspiration, the rest of us had Dylan.

great poet, terrible performance

The band from NY that opened was pretty good.
Willie talked through most of his set but occasionally broke into song for a few bars, and the band did a good job keeping up with his constantly varying rhythm. Not a huge fan to begin with, but I was satisfied.
John rocked the house. Lots of energy, some new stuff I hadn't heard that was pretty good, engaged with the crowd. Pop music, but well done.
Now on to Bob. I love his recorded music, especially the first several albums. Many of his songs are on my all-time favorites list, and they aren't the ones that get much radio airplay either.
But...last night's performance was horrible. He would be over halfway through a song before I could even recognize what it was, and that's only because I would pick up a word here or there and I know the songs so well. The band was tight, but every single song was mashed into this repetitive electric blues sound, and Bob was doing a screaming mumble (if you can imagine that) of every lyric, totally ignoring the crowd. Halfway through his set, people were just streaming out of the ballpark. I love Dylan's music so much I pressured my companions to hold out for it to get better, but it never did (unless it was during the encore, because even I gave up and left before that). Bob will live on in my iPod and on my stereo, but I will never see him live again as long as he's playing with a huge electric band in a big ballpark. I would so love to see him solo with just an acoustic guitar and harmonica, but let's face it that's not gonna happen. Not worth my $75.

Dylan knocked it out of the Durham Ballpark!

Dylan was great!!!! He did a wide range of his songs. Love that he did "Twiddle Dee & Tweedle Dum , Summer Days, Lonesome Day Blues, & Po' Boy" off of "Love & Theft" album! Kept waiting to hear "Mississippi". Ending with "All Along the Watchtower" was a great ending to a great concert. This was my first Dylan concert and it was truly a moment in my life that I will never forget! Bobby, you knocked it out of the Durham Ballpark last night!! Thanks!

“You can do what you please, you don't need my advice
Before you call me any dirty names you better think twice”

Although I seldom venture onto the field for these shows, I decided do just that. Not knowing when/if I would ever have this opportunity again, I headed down as soon as Mellencamp finished. I got about 60 feet away, not bad for an old man. I enjoyed the opening: the last several shows I attended Bob exclusively played keyboards. It was great seeing him strap on the guitar again.
Having attended over 30 Dylan concerts over the past 20 years, I have learned to accept some disappointments. More importantly, I have come to identify and treasure certain moments from each show that makes it a unique experience.
Disappointments: The sound was indeed poor at times. Beyond the Horizon was quite garbled. Rolling Stone sounded as if some of the instruments needed tuning. Also, during Rolling Stone, Bob looked like he was totally uninterested.
Treasures: The harmonica intro on Summer Days. The electrifying (pun intended) It’s Alright Ma. The energy Bob put into Lonesome Days, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, etc. The way he captured certain phrases: “I wish to Gaaaawwwwd that it was night”. All in all I felt it was a great night.
For those who complain about the setlist, especially the ending, being too predictable: Years ago you KNEW the show would end with Rolling Stone, followed by either Times Changing or Blowing in the Wind, and finally either Highway 61 or Maggies Farm. People complained about it. At one point years ago you KNEW you would hear Ballad of a Thin Man at every show. People complained. No one is ever going to be totally satisfied at every show. I urge you to look for the good or unique and treasure it: you never know when you will see him again.
On the way home from the show I was listening to “Good As I Been to You”. I hadn’t listened to it in a while, and I was struck anew by the power of Dylan with just an acoustic guitar, harmonica, and microphone. How I wish I could see him perform like that again! Thanks, Bob, for a terrific show in Durham.

That guy yelled in my face for a good ten seconds after a attempted a shot with my camera. I actually thought we were allowed to use our cameras with no flash because of what a guard at said prior to the show. He really was over the top!

Great!

The comments about the sound are accurate. It got a lot louder for Dylan's set and they appeared to be having complaints about their monitor levels as well.

It was a GREAT show, though, and Dylan did a great job. Too bad we weren't allowed to take pictures up in the front - I got busted for making an attempt, so I didn't get any shots of him. Maybe next time!

This was my fifth Dylan

4

This was my fifth Dylan show. It wasn't quite as good as HoB Dallas from February 2008, but it was better than the Norfolk show a few days ago. I think the crowd had great energy here in NC!

Part of the reason that this show was an improvement over the Norfolk was because the DBAP staff at the door were so much nicer than whomever was staffing the door at the Harbor Park show (yellow shirts; maybe with Bob or Ticketmaster?). I had a camera in my bag, not realizing that they were verboten, and the lady checking my bag was an über-witch about it. The no camera policy is complete and utter bollocks. I paid $80 ($67.50 + fees) for these tickets, let me take photos to show my friends. Christ.

That said, the set list at this show was pretty decent, but I did play quite a few rounds of the "guess what song this is!" game with my husband, but that's all in good fun. I love that the set list got posted here so quickly, because I made my own list in my iPhone and had "something incomprehensible" down for at least three songs. Haha!

Two or three songs in the middle were slow and muddled—a bit too much so for my taste—but I was drawn down into the crowd during "Highway 61 Revisited," pulled to the stage by some invisible, hypnotic force. I wait for that moment to happen at every Dylan show, never knowing quite when it will happen, but trusting that it will and, when it does, it makes what could have been an ordinary concert into a religious experience. And last night was no different: I got caught up with the spirit—I was in the throes, I tell you! And that encore: hot damn! I was practically in tears from the joy I felt.

But, say, y'all should work on getting an accordionist. I want to cry—and not from joy this time—thinking about these missed opportunities to play "Beyond Here Lies Nothin'"; that song is so amazingly good.

Every time Bob introduces his band at the end, I get all riled up because he's acknowledging us. This time, I shouted, "he's talking to me!" which got some laughs from folks nearby. Some think he considers himself above us because he doesn't talk to us, but Bob Dylan is no phony. Sure, he could throw out a saccharine "We love you, [insert name of town here]!" but that, to me, would feel cheap and tawdry coming from a man like this. The fact that he doesn't look at his audience—doesn't speak to us—doesn't mean that he isn't speaking to me. I think it keeps him enigmatic, keeps me craving his attention, his adoration, his approval, his praise, even when I know that will never happen. And I love that!

I don't know when or where I'll get to see him next, but I look forward to it. I love this man.

Show was very good. We were down front so most of loudness went over us. Sound was not that bad. For me Highway 61 was one of the highlights of the night. It seemed the band and Dylan finally came togehter and had fun with this selection. I agree with the comment that he was playing the Devil on some tunes especially when he gave that oh so devilish grin throughout Tweedle Dee/Tweedle Dum. Finally, my other highlight was Jolene. You could really feel his passionate frustration as he told this tale. Overall worth the 5+ hours standing in the heat.

Sound and Harrassment

1

Here's an idea. As posted above, please find a sound board operator who is not hearing impaired. And please keep a reign on the toadie with the Detroit Tigers baseball cap who kept harassing everyone in the front three rows during the opening four songs. The guy was an ass. Get with the program, it's 2009 there are these new inventions called cell phones with cameras. EVERYONE has them. Yelling and screaming and trying to assault (yes, grabbing people is assault) the hundred or so people snapping personal photos is something Dylan and his henchman need to get over. Concentrate on the music Bob. Would not pay to see him again, would rather listen to his albums and have the illusion he can still sing.

Bob Dylan in Durham

I have to agree with many of the posters here. I like Dylan but he was basically incomprehensible for all of but maybe two songs. He also looked as though he was playing a joke on the crowd with these odd little looks he cast sideways. Nelson and Mellencamp were pretty solid, they sure had the crowd going with them. The one thing I thought was totally hilarious though was the Dylan toadie wearing the Detroit Tigers hat who kept threatening people with camera phones in the front three rows for the first four songs. The security detail knows that in these modern times policing the use of camera phones is all but impossible. After blowing smoke the Toadie finally stomped off but not before he distracted everyone on the front three rows. Maybe if Dylan gave as much attention to the sound he was emitting (both instruments and vocals) as his goon did trying to keep people from taking photos he wouldn't disappoint so many people. And what I find extra hilarious now is the site (here) WANTS people to upload their photos. Very sad. I certainly wouldn't pay to hear him again. I'll be happy to listen to his recordings and have the illusion that he can still sing.

Bob in rare form

5

This is my only show of the tour and only my second time seeing Bob, but I thought he played about as good a show as he could. The sound was very good where we were on the field.
I was struck again by what a thriving artist Dylan still is and what a vital band they are as a whole. Not content to churn out standards or even reworked versions as Bob obviously has loved to do since the beginning, but pushing each other throught the songs. The band definitely follows Bob's lead. His voice is like the water. If he goes choppy, the band starts to shorten their beats and when he swings it out, the music, so effortlessly, smothes out into this danceable groove.

I love that most of the set relied on newer material and those songs came across great. Cat's in the Well was great as was a swinging version of Don't Think Twice, but they really got it going on Lonsome Day Blues and didn't let up until Nettie More (a poorly placed song in my opinion). Highway 61 sounded the same as I have heard it before, which is awesome but the real highlight was the form It's Alright Ma took. Rocking and gutteral. Bob was feeling it to. Looking like the Devil at times, he worked that keyboard while he danced with it and the entire time completely confident and in control. To see him, like a kid, pull his hands off the keys, touch the back of his hair with excitment about where the music is going, and then jump back on the board with his flare and direction was phenomenal.

Maybe the band is worn from ending every show with the same 2 or 3 songs or maybe it is that Bob is less apt to change Rolling Stone and Watchtower up, like he does the others, but they just didn't have the same feeling as the rest of the show. You get a glimpse at what the show would be like if Dylan and his band relied on peoples emotional connection to a song to carry the concert instead of exploring new musical territory on a nightly basis. It wouldn't have me coming back for more.

Can't wait for the next tour!

pretty good

3

i thought willie and john put on great shows. we were over in the bleachers on the third base side and the sound was fine. john mellencamp's sound was much louder than the other two, but i did notice when we walked down to get beer that the sound was really echoing off the brick wall at the back of the covered seats. we both commented that it would have been hard to listen to it from that angle, with the echo and the resulting noisiness.

i thought bob played well. he looked good too. it was a good mix of songs and i always enjoy hearing him play his stuff with different arrangements.

that being said, i was sitting around a group of people who have seen him countless times, know the songs, etc and we still had trouble picking out which song was which for several of them. i can definitely see someone being frustrated who paid $70 but who maybe went into this without understanding how he rearranges his songs. your standard music show experience being one wherein you hear songs with which you are familiar mixed with those that perhaps you are not. again, i like the way he does it, but i can't find fault with a more casual fan being disappointed that it is always hard to pick out what he's doing. that's his choice, a little research pre-show would let you know that's how he does it, but again it looked like even after all these years it still surprised the several hundred people who packed up after three songs.

Good show. Sound not that bad.

4

I thought Willie was good. His guitar solos are these kind of sloppy punk rock solos, but they had character. Mellencamp was loud, but sound was good overall. Not my favorite music, but he put on the best performance of the three.

I didn't think the Dylan sound was bad, but I was standing right in front of the soundboard, so I was in the sweet spot. The pedal steel was pretty low in the mix, but otherwise I could hear everything fine.

He played a lot of Love and Theft, Modern Times, and a couple new songs. So if you're expecting all mid-60's songs, you probably left early. He did throw out Rolling Stone and Watchtower at the end though. I really liked Don't Think Twice and Tweedle Dee.

Disappointed

No Rating

I am a huge Dylan fan and I didn't leave early in hopes that things would get better (which they didn't). I am pretty cool with rearrangements and croaking through songs, but the combination of Dylan's total mumbling, a set list which was biased towards more recent albums, and pure God awful sound left me utterly disappointed. I will probably not go to another Dylan show. This was my 4th over the past 20 years and I was very excited since the last show I saw at a ballpark was really good. I can't say the same for this one.
I actually went to the sound booth to complain and ask that they just turn down Dylan's mic a little. Someone there said lots of people were coming up to say the same thing but the guy running the board was just ignoring them. Pure arrogance!
I thought Willie was better than usual and that Mellencamp stole the show. I was sad when he finished - whereas I really just wanted the Dylan part to be over.

The Man...still

4

Worth the dime for sure. Those who left early I bet couldn't name ten Dylan songs. Sound was messed up on the entire gig. Not the entire time, but sporadic. Willie was Willie, Mellencamp pop rocked us, quite loud though for sure. I really enjoyed Dylan's set, different than his "cd's",(which is the way his shows always go and why some left I am sure) but every time I see him his renditions of his songs is what makes him, The Man...still.

Sound

No Rating

I agree with the comments about the sound quality. I also wish they turned down the volume a bit on Mellencamp. My problem hearing Dylan may have been caused by the ringing in my ears after John had finished. In spite of sound problems, both gave a great concerts. I cannot say the same about Willie Nelson. He didn't take most of the songs seriously and his guitar doodling sounded awful most of the time.

Sound was awful for Bob...

3

Willie was good, very comfortable volume. John was great, lots of energy. It was pretty loud but but still a good clear sound. Bob needs a new soundman. They jacked the volume as soon as he came on and it was as clear as mud. Somebody's guitar was out of tune for at least the first couple of songs. People left in droves after about 2 or 3 songs. Sad, because it was really a pretty good show. Great new arrangements (at least for me) of some oldies. Loved "Watchtower". The sound was so bad if you weren't familar with the last few albums you wouldn't have had a clue what you were hearing.
