Dylan - Great (As Always)

5

An hour and half of straight Dylan - rocking the house, singing old and new. Loved Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat was excellent. Spirit on the Water (Modern Times - one of my favorites) was out of this world. It's alright ma was superb. Jolene awesome. Like a Rolling Stone to die for. Thunder on the Mountain, and All Along the Watchtower - Classic.

(Almost impossible to do Spirit on the Water without Thunder on the Mountain.)

Dylan's showmanship is his lack thereof. He let his music talk. And it screamed. For a man who has more home run songs than Barry Bonds, he hit it out again. Only disappointment was that he didn't play for five hours, rather than 1.5.

And, thanks for taking the stage 15 minutes after Mellencamp left.

i am glad i am not alone in this sentiment. i feel the same way. bob dylan is someone special and a good example of a fine human being. as great as he is, he is equally humble. which makes him a high adept and capable of reaching the ultimate human potential: love.

we r lucky he shares his musical/artistic talents with us.

Understanding Bob

I would like first before writing this review state that I am a disabled person and, it is hard for me to travel to Dylan’s shows these days, so I would like to thank my dear friend of many years Pat N for taking me to this one.

It was a sultry summer South Alabama night and, as romantic as some may think that sounds, for many it was a bit too sultry. The afternoon storms which had come and gone by show time left the air so thick with humidity that audience discomfort level was excruciating to say the least. All this aside the “show” itself was sensational. I am writing of Bob of course.
As for Willie, he talked many of his lyrics however, at age seventy-six I’ll take that and mark it as well done and entertaining. I have seen Willie many times and although he doesn’t sound exactly as he once did, he and guitar "Trigger" still evoke the hauntings of the smoky pool halls, the horses trot on the Western Plains, and the silent inner tears of cowboys as their lady loves come and go. Willie is to be commended for staying true to the outlaw art within country music he created, he doesn’t sell out and let’s hope he remains on the road for a long time.
John Melloncamp, who performed after Willie, I did not come to see. To my surprise many of the folks around me did. It is not that I dislike him I’ve just never been swept away by his music. I suppose it’s safe to say I have been indifferent to it over the years. It is also safe to say that John "rocked the house" as they say, but it just didn’t seem to fit in a Dylan show. For many older Dylan fans, it prolonged the evening to the point of being tiresome. So Melloncamp on his own for his fans: wonderful. As part of a Dylan show: No
Then there is Bob…Bob,Bob,Bob……I have seen this man perform many times all over our country and in Europe. I have studied his work and life in depth, and even had writings of my own about him published. He never disappoints and in spite of the fore mentioned sultry heat, and lengthiness of the night, he didn’t disappoint this time either. To see Dylan in concert is simply to witness history. He is the biggest icon on the planet. He is a walking, talking relic from another time and yet still remains a visionary creating art still for the
present.
Fridays show was rich and vibrant
It just plain sounded good.
Remaining on the subject of what the ears hear, I wish to state to many out there who are perhaps like one young man I heard as we exited the show say “Dylan's voice is weird. He can’t sing”……Well to you who agree with that you should try and understand listening to Bob. First, Dylan’s voice's, all of them, match his words. Truth shouldn’t be delivered in a pretty package. Even Bob himself has said that the words come first, before the sound. Second, Dylan's’s art has never been just about entertaining. His words have lived to not only move hearts and souls, witch is where many good artist stop but, they are sent to shake our brain and make us exercise it once and awhile. So to that young man out there somewhere and those of you like him please know and note, that to be a Bob Dylan fan he requires some deeper living from you. That is what makes him like no other artist of his time.

Outstanding show...good venue...bob's vocals and keys high in the mix...lots of harp...the highlight of the night, without a doubt, had to be the center stage performance of "Forgetful Heart"...could be the most passionate single song performance I've seen bob give in the past five years...

WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO

Bob is the puppet and the puppet master. He had wires attatched to his fingers that connected to the band of mannequins. Or maybe he is just a fragment of our imagination.
Im going to the Greek Theatre, i just cant help myself!

you should have been there,

you should have been there, you missed Bob Dylan. And that is more than words can tell.

Bob Dylan In Top Form

I have seen Bob on stage since the 60's. With the Band, Tom Petty, The Greatful Dead....He was wonderful, the band supertight and he was in Top Form. All I can say is "Thanks again Bob for a super hot show." You are the poet of it all. Thanks for all the music and poetry that you have given us. But most of all, thanks for just being who you are, Bob Dylan.

Thanks Bob and The Band!!

Great show, Bob and band were in top form. While this was my 44th Dylan show, it was obvious that there were many "first timers" that were undoubtedly lured by the Willie / John / Bob triple-header and when they didn't hear Dylan circa 1974, they were disappointed. Anyone who has actually listened to Bob's last few albums know where his voice is these days and the band just plain smokes. When Bob likes his latest albums, he actually plays tracks from them. Imagine that.

So here's the simple arithmetic: Dylan will play about 14 songs on any given night and with a catalog of at least 50 songs that even the most casual fan knows by heart, you will be disappointed when you don't hear 45 of those 50. I know I am. But I keep coming back exactly because no two shows are the same and if I go to enough of them, I will hear many of those tunes and new ones that are fresh and exciting. Open your minds and ears - this is a performance by a vibrant, contemporary artist, not an oldies act making one more round...

Speaking of which, I love Willie Nelson, but his set consisting of EXACTLY the songs everyone expected was somewhat flat and subdued. Mellencamp challenged the crowd a bit more with some newer tunes mixed in with the favs and a nice solo acoustic mini-set midway thru. A highlight for me during Dylan's set was Bob's emotional centerstage reading of his new song "Forgetful Heart." How people don't appreaciate the artistry there is beyond me.

Bottom line, excellent show. And newcomers are welcome; just don't grumble when songs written in the last decade are played!

From the moment I heard

From the moment I heard "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" I was in heaven - it is one of my all time favorites. To hear these iconic songs was beyond words - but what I wasn't expecting was to hear one of the absolute BEST bands playing them that I have ever heard in my life. I am not a musician and don't know the words to technically describe them so I'll do my best - they sounded like the best rockabilly band in the world crossed with the best soul band in the world - plus the blues and I don't even know what all. That probably makes no sense - I just know they were kickass musicians and I could have listened to them all night. Thank you band and thank you Bob Dylan - I will never forget July 31st at The Wharf.

Guitars filtering Hubert Sumlin through Jones and Richards, High intensity drums with unbelievable groove depth, tuned in utility man with nice sax like violin parts, the bass player with fire keen attention to the moment and joy for being there. Dylan channeling Alan Price and Augie Meyers, with a voice from a '30's Universal soundstage. Songs to live in. This band Rocked the House. Please may i have more?
