a belated thank you

No Rating

Thanks once again to Bob and band for a great two days at the Greek. While I for one thought Saturday night had more verve, Sunday was cool in its own way. For the first time ever, I had both of my children with me at a concert - 12 year old daughter, and 22 year old son. I would have been content sitting up on the steps or back a few rows, but my son happened to grab a spot on the rail, stage left. It was all fun, loved the High Water and Stuck Inside of Mobile, Leopard Skin, etc., and enjoyed the fact that my son thought it was great. My daughter was a little short to be able to see much on the extremely high stage, but she amused herself with her brother's I-phone, until I moved her to higher ground and a better view : )

It's great to see everyone on stage enjoying themselves - it definitely impacts the audience!

All in all, a fabulous early birthday weekend for me - thank you!

First of all, what a beautiful night and venue. The weather was fantastic! Great vocal performance from Bob. What a treat it was to here "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again." Especially cool was "Forgetful Heart." Bob seemed to be smiling more than before and I really love how he is doing many songs at center stage with the harmonica. The band is still sounding great as well. I can't wait for the next stop in NorCal/Bay Area/Central Valley.

She bent down to tie the laces of my shoes...

My 2 month old boy first show, along with my Wife, Daughter (3) and me. We can't get enough! I love how there is this common thread that speaks to me like something I have heard before (Jerry) and my own band. Thank you Bob for sharing your songs with our heart. The guitar solo on watchtower was psychedelic (Jimmy). Big ups to the band! We need a bus!

Bob really got into some jams with the band.
He looks like he's having a good time while
the theme of the set is longing for old love.
Don't we all.

Having seen Dylan's last

Having seen Dylan's last four Bay Area concerts - Santa Rosa Fairgrounds, the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and Konocti Resort (which was great in part because of its exclusive remoteness) it's obvious the Greek is the perfect venue for him. The general admission provided a wonderful freedom to concert goers who could either sit comfortably or gather in the pit at the feet of the Master. Where I was - surrounded by lots of college kids who were absolutely rivited and enthusiastically enjoying every second of the concert. (UCB offers a Bob Dylan class!)

Bob looked - as always - impeccably attired. This time in what may be described as a black Spanish suit jacket with chain embellishments, black pants with a strip of rhinestones down each pant leg, a subtle and beautiful rhinestoned white Oxford shirt, a red tie, and brown Gypsy hat. It's important to state here that Dylan's costumes are never cartoonish but always appropriate and thoughtfully put together. (With a nod to a famous '60s SF photo that was reprinted in the Chronicle the Sunday before it, he wore his iconic black and white polka dot shirt to his Santa Rosa concert.)

To me, disparaging Dylan's (a master showman) taste in outfits is akin to disparaging his singing, which has always been crafted with the utmost care. Granted, in concert now, his voice can be a bit gravelly (whose wouldn't with his schedule?) but I beg to differ with ignorant critics throughout his career who opined that Dylan couldn't sing. That is - and always was - absolute horse rubbish.

The band, all versatile and uber-professional musicians, was absolutely superb, so disciplined and attuned to Bob's every cue. Dylan's interplay on stage with the new/old (?) lead guitarist, Charlie (a showboat both as a guitarist and a young man, the best of both worlds) creates some added spontenaity and a vital loseness. The trust is there, the talent is there, the sexual charisma is there, so rock on, Bob!

Anyone who feels they miss the old Bob Dylan should update their music collection. You're missing out on amazing multitudes of rich Dylan masterpieces. It was great hearing songs from the new albums Together Through Life and Modern Times. Highway 61 blew everyone around me away. And I was thrilled to hear Ballad of a Thin Man. Especially hot if you've enjoyed the movie, I'm Not There.

Bob played the keyboard, played guitar shoulder to shoulder with Charlie, and sang several songs mid stage standing in the spotlight with his harmonica. Who could ask for more?

LOVE YA, BOB.

Thanks Bob...I really needed it

Tryin' to get to heaven before they close the door

The past year has been one of the roughest in a life of rough years...I lost my best friend of over 35 years. We were true comadres and outlaws...traveled the most remote areas of mexico in my old VW bus-kids in tow, delivered each others babies at home and grew the most gorgeous gardens each summer where we would sit in our bikinis sipping ice tea and laugh at all our escapades. I know I will never find anyone as brave and strong and brilliant to carry on and bear what must be born...alone.

A few months ago I starting telling everyone that I needed to see Bob Dylan...not sure why. It was like an inner voice speaking thru me... Actually I really wanted to see him and drink a vodka martini and get some advice on how I keep on keeping on... But one thing I've learned from Bob is if you want somebody to trust...trust yourself. So with my dear son in law at my side we drove on over to Berkeley and as I walked into the Greek Theatre the first song I heard was
Tryin' to get to heaven before they close the door.
I cried the whole way through

It was a comfort to realize that my most beloved friend made it to heaven before they closed the door. Thanks Bob for the reminder that wherever we go when we leave this place she is there and I know she will make sure that door is open when I get there!

PS I am giving the show a 5 star rating but given that it was such a spiritual out of body experience for me personally its kinda like rating a sunset after a hurricane.

wow. The Greek was a magical setting last night for the Bard to weave his tapestry into phrases and soundscapes.

Charged out of the gates with' Leopard Skin'- then turned a corner into a stunning 'this dream of you'. at first, i was a little sad it wasn't a dusty old gem in the 2 slot, seeing recent set lists, and especially with a 'man in me' the night before. but this new tune was sung with care and bob came out from the keys to deliver it center stage with just his voice and harp and crooning hand gestures. amazing.

then a jaunty 'Stuck inside of Mobile' which got everyone, including the band, loosened up. 'Beyond here lies nothing' was a feel good romp . then a powerful 'trying to get to heaven' complete with a dreamlike star backdrop behind the stage. very moving rendition.

on to 'Highwater' which was fun, and then... WHAT?- 'a hard rain gonna fall'? really wow. awesome!
other highlights - 'Forgetful heart' was powerful and bob's voice was well lubed and deep and clear at this point.
"ballad of a thin man' another one out of left field and really cemented the fact that this was a great show in my mind.
thanks Bob and the band- Charlie, it is good to have you back!!!

How long can I stay in this nowhere café
'fore night turns into day
I wonder why I'm so frightened of dawn
All I have and all I know
Is this dream of you
Which keeps me living on

There's a moment when all old things
Become new again
But that moment might have come and gone
All I have and all I know
Is this dream of you
Which keeps me living on

I look away, but I keep seeing it
I don't want to believe, but I keep believing it
Shadows dance upon the wall
Shadows that seem to know it all

Am I too blind to see, is my heart playing tricks on me
I'm lost in the crowd
All my tears are gone
All I have and all I know
Is this dream of you
Which keeps me living on

Everything I touch seems to disappear
Everywhere I turn you are always here
I'll run this race until my earthly death
I'll defend this place with my dying breath

From a cheerless room in a curtained gloom
I saw a star from heaven fall
I turned and looked again but it was gone
All I have and all I know
Is this dream of you
Which keeps me living on
