Stu's joke
No Rating
The joke went pretty much like this:
"I went to my psychiatrist the other day. He told me I was crazy. So I asked for a second opinion. He told me I was ugly, too."
Also, when Bob got to Tony, he said "On the bass guitar, Tony Garnier. He IS the psychiatrist."
Personally, I found the joke a little corny, but hey, it made Bob laugh, right into the first line of Jolene. And it stopped the crowd from screaming for long enough to hear Bob's introductions of the band members, so that may have been why he stepped in... I don't really know.
The Heart of Saturday Night

Bob Dylan and his cowboy band gassed up the buses on the west coast last early fall and have been a travelin’ the highway. Word spread early that Bob was making a new stand with Charlie Sexton back in the band.
With three shows scheduled in Boston and three scheduled in NYC we figured why not one of each we love a road trip when Bob and the boys are at the end of our line.
We grabbed our bags and headed down the Mass Pike counting pilgrim hats to Boston. We checked into the Intercontinental hotel and met up with the Kid before the show.
This was the 2nd show of a three night stand at the historic Wang Theater now part of the Citi Performing Arts Center. The theater has been well restored and seats comfortably 3600 people… it was full. Our seats were up close the way we like them and with a little luck on the left. Our bones were all a tingling with anticipation that tonight’s show was going to be like something we hadn’t seen since the last century.
I was hoping for the show to open with Maggie’s Farm, but instead got a par for the course “Cat’s In The Well”. Bob came out center stage tonight and strapped on the guitar for “Lay Lady Lay” and even though it seemed to take a few minutes for the troubadour to catch up and find the groove this song did not disappoint. Tonight’s show did not bring out sacred relics from the big book of Bob; unless of course you consider “Every Grain of Sand” a rarity. This song, along with “Hattie Carroll”, “Ballad of Hollis Brown” , “Spirit on Water”, and “When The Deal Goes Down” slowed and mellowed the show which could make one almost yawn or head for the lobby for a drink and a stretch since you weren’t allowed to stand up until “Thunder on The Mountain”.
“My Wife’s Home Town”, “Thunder On The Mountain”, “Highway 61” and “Ballad of a Thin Man”, re-worked versions that rocked and knocked my socks right off. If I had been home I would have been rearranging the living room furniture and twisting the night away with a finger snap, hip sway and a two step to boot. But it was “Ain’t Talkin’ “that I ain’t shakin’ after the show, with its cowboy rhythm for a few minutes I thought I was out ridin’ fences.
Bob Dylan, Charlie Sexton and the rest of the cowboy band are a one of a kind. The husband spent the night counting Charlie’s guitars and amazed by Sexton’s ability to split and go off on his own rifts and then drift back in, right in sync with Bob. The band was in good form.
This show’s revitalizing, hypnotizing, Texas style blues boogie, made you feel like you were barrelin’ down the boulevard lookin’ for the heart of Saturday night…and you found it right here in front of you on the stage of The Wang Theater minus Nag Champa. Bob Dylan the animated crooner came out tonight with guitar, keyboard, and harmonica blazing and even though he didn’t capture the heart of Saturday night he certainly did pierce it. Mr. Dylan has added a slightly new twist to his show and it has me asking: “Please sir, May I Have Some More.
P.S. We would have liked to have heard Stu’s joke, however, the secret service styled security men that spent the night walking back and forth in front of us were busy yelling at a patron for dancing at a concert so we missed it.

the colors of his shirt and tie r important 2 me. i happen 2 think he is beautiful. handsome does not do him justice. his body should be adorned with the finest materials and jewels.
Excellent show!
I'm very glad that this concert was my first time seeing Bob because I got to hear many of my favorite songs, including "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll", "The Ballad of Hollis Brown", as well as all the standards for this tour. Other highlights of the show that are becoming favorites for my are "Cold Irons Bound" and "Spirit On The Water". In terms of the performance, I found Bob's voice to be in great form. When he held certain high notes, you'd really think you were listening to a much younger Bob. And of course he mixed it up with plenty of the low, raspy tones that make his older-man voice so powerful and perfect for the bluesly songs, like "My Wife's Hometown", another real standout of the night. His playing was also great, whether on keyboard, guitar or harp. During one song, he even played keyboard with one hand and harp with the other! Bob was very animated, constantly doing knee-twists, bobbing back and forth, and, when not playing keyboard or guitar, dramatically waving his arms. I really wish I had been seated closer to the stage so I could have been able to see his smiles and other facial expressions. The thing that impressed me most about the band was how well they play as a unit, blending together so well to compliment the rhythms and melodies that Bob lays out in his playing.
One moment that I thought was rather odd was when Stu Kimball marched across the stage and cut Bob off during the band introductions to make a joke. Was this to stall for time, quiet down the crowd, just lighten the mood after so many heavy songs, or something else? Personally, I thought the joke was pretty dumb, but Bob was still laughing during the first line of "Jolene", which I thought came off much better than "Like A Rolling Stone," the only song where Bob seemed to stumble a couple times, so I guess whatever Stu was doing worked.
Anecdotely, thanks to heehawmike's review of Sunday's show, I've just realized that the venue where I just got to Bob for the first time is the same one where most of my favorite live album of his, "The Bootleg Series, Vol. 5 - Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue", was recorded! I hadn't realized this until now since the Wang was then called the Boston Music Hall.
Kate, it was the yellow-trimmed suit that he was wearing, which is my favorite of his.
Best of three!

Well, for me it was. All 3 shows were great, believe me. But when Bob sang "My Wife´s Home Town", the crowd was electrified, quiet, hooked....unbelievable performance. After that, the show could not be taken into words, I´m still thinking, that all was a dream. Okay, I´m cool again now ;-) Fantastic evening in the Wang, thanks for that Bob, Tony, Larry, Stu, Don and George....hope to see you again next summer over here in Europe!

He could play forever, couldn't he?
He was in great voice, great showmanship, if you ask me. My first Dylan concert and I loved it. Thought every song was a treat. But the highlight: Stu Kimball's joke, which stopped Bob in his intros and made him laugh. Hee hee. We got a very animated Bob on Saturday night and from where I was sitting in the nosebleed seats (and seriously, I was like a half-mile from the stage, Bob was a speck), he looked like he was really into it. The shadow play during Cold Irons Bound was fun for us way the hell up there. And Charlie Sexton... AWESOME!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's a rare offering, isn't it? So sorry about everyone having to deal with the rain; it creates so much stress when you're just trying to have a good time. . .
Irishlass- you are a very insightful, caring and thoughtful gal, and I like your style! Carry on!
Ditto to you, Jen0sophia! (Did I get your moniker correct? Apologies if not!)

Something is burning, baby, are you aware?
Something is the matter, baby, there's smoke in your hair
Are you still my friend, baby, show me a sign
Is the love in your heart for me turning blind?
You've been avoiding the main streets for a long, long while
The truth that I'm seeking is in your missing file
What's your position, baby, what's going on?
Why is the light in your eyes nearly gone?
I know everything about this place, or so it seems
Am I no longer a part of your plans or your dreams?
Well, it is so obvious that something has changed
What's happening, baby, to make you act so strange?
Something is burning, baby, here's what I say
Even the bloodhounds of London couldn't find you today
I see the shadow of a man, baby, makin' you blue
Who is he, baby, and what's he to you?
We've reached the edge of the road, baby, where the pasture begins
Where charity is supposed to cover up a multitude of sins
But where do you live, baby, and where is the light?
Why are your eyes just staring off in the night?
I can feel it in the night when I think of you
I can feel it in the light and it's got to be true
You can't live by bread alone, you won't be satisfied
You can't roll away the stone if your hands are tied
Got to start someplace, baby, can you explain?
Please don't fade away on me, baby, like the midnight train
Answer me, baby, a casual look will do
Just what in the world has come over you?
I can feel it in the wind and it's upside down
I can feel it in the dust as I get off the bus on the outskirts of town
I've had the Mexico City blues since the last hairpin curve
I don't wanna see you bleed, I know what you need but it ain't what you deserve
Something is burning, baby, something's in flames
There's a man going 'round calling names
Ring down when you're ready, baby, I'm waiting for you
I believe in the impossible, you know that I do

After seeing song number 2 posted, had a case of 'biggest regret of my life" not going to the show. Thank the kindest gods that it's but a typo, or is it? Will sleep with peace, dry with a roof, this night, that instead the troubadour waxed on about big brass beds.

Lay Lady Lay
JackD is right - Lay lady Lay instead of Lay down your weary tune.
Breathtaking show, Bob is better than ever - his band was awesome. Simply awesome, a wonderful gift from my other half, have been waiting to see Dylan for 8 years. Simply fantastic.
Thank you!

That setlist ain't right. Just got back from the show. he played Lay Lady Lay first or second song (don't exactly remember which) but it was before "Most Likely". If I hadn't drank so much, I might remember more clearly, but I know for damn sure he played Lay Lady Lay right at the start. Maybe instead of "Lay Down" as reported here. Awesome show - Ballad of Hollis Brown was especially haunting.

Lay Down Your Weary Tune...that would have been a witness to wonder! Hope Mr. Dylan enjoyed playing it as much as we all love to listen. Wish he would play Born in Time, that is greatest. What a wonderful setlist, cannot wait for the reviews, for I hope to live vicariously through someone! ;-)
