Idiot Wind
CAN YOU PLEASE CRAWL OUT YOUR WINDOW 1966
He sits in your room, his tomb, with a fist full of tacks
Preoccupied with his vengeance
Cursing the dead that can't answer him back
I'm sure that he has no intentions
Of looking your way, unless it's to say
That he needs you to test his inventions.
“He sits” occupies a seat as a member of a body of officials: sit in the Senate “in your room” in your area, your Congressional District “his tomb” where he will ultimately be defeated “with a fist full of tacks” a course of action meant to minimize opposition to the attainment of a goal “Preoccupied with his vengeance” focusing his attention on war “Cursing the dead that can't answer him back” damning those who died in previous wars “I'm sure that he has no intentions / Of looking your way” of doing something in your behalf “unless it's to say / That he needs you to test his inventions” unless it to say that he need you to test his new military hardware on the battlefield.
Can you please crawl out your window?
Use your arms and legs it won't ruin you
How can you say he will haunt you?
You can go back to him any time you want to.
“Can you please crawl” appear after being hidden or not active for a long time “out your window?” out of your political party “Use your arms” an administrative or functional branch, as of an organization “and legs” one of several contests that must be successfully completed in order to determine the winner of a competition, a primary “it won't ruin you / How can you say he will haunt” be continually present in; pervade the American political scene “You can go back to him any time you want to” you can go back to the Democratic Party any time you want to.
He looks so truthful, is this how he feels
Trying to peel the moon and expose it
With his businesslike anger and his bloodhounds that kneel
If he needs a third eye he just grows it
He just needs you to talk or to hand him his chalk
Or pick it up after he throws it.
“He looks so truthful” the Democrats seem as if they are not disposed to cheat or defraud; not deceptive or fraudulent; ‘honest politicians’ “is this how he feels” does he really have compassion or sympathy, does he really believe this to be true about himself “Trying to peel the moon” trying to pull off, effectuate a moon shot “and expose it” photograph it; subject a photographic film to the action of light “With his businesslike anger” with his efficient and methodical violent bitter feelings against conservative Republicans like Senator Barry Goldwater “and his bloodhounds” informal; a relentless pursuer ‘death and taxes’ “that kneel” get down on their knees, make obeisance like the IRS “If he needs a third eye” the FBI “he just grows it” he causes it to increase or expand by concerted effort “He just needs you to talk” to talk on behalf of the Democratic Party “or to hand him his chalk” or to get him elected, vote totals written in chalk “Or pick it up after he throws it” or elect him on another occasion if he throws the election.
Why does he look so righteous while your face is so changed
Are you frightened of the box you keep him in
While his genocide fools and his friends rearrange
Their religion of the little ten women
That backs up their views but your face is so bruised
Come on out the dark is beginning.
“Why does he look so righteous” morally justifiable “while your face” while your race; When The Ship Comes In, “the sun will respect every face on the deck the hour that the ship comes in” Tight Connection To My Heart “Never could learn to drink that blood and call it wine” I never could accept the patently false myths of Christianity “Never could learn to look at your face and call it mine” I never could regard myself as anything but Jewish “is so changed” is being polluted by the Civil Rights Movement “Are you frightened of the box you keep him in” are you afraid to vote for Republicans who do not believe in integration? “While his genocide fools” while his race mixing, mix master politicians “and his friends” and his political allies such as the Jews “rearrange” put into a new order or arrangement “Their religion of” a cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal; of the activist “the little ten women” Supreme Court of the United States with less than ten justices “That backs up their views” that supports the Democrats push for Civil Rights and integration with their legal decisions “but your face is so bruised” but it is your race is being blackened, discolored “Come on out the dark is beginning” come on out the mongrelization of America is just beginning.
In Chronicles Dylan wrote this about Ray Gooch, who provided him with a place to crash, “He was a nonconformist, a nonintegrator [a racist] and a Southern nationalist. Ray had said that New York City was the city that won the Civil War, came out on top-that the wrong side had lost, that slavery was evil and that the thing would have died out anyway, Lincoln or no Lincoln. I heard him say it and thought it was a mysterious and bad thing to say, but if he said it, he said it and that's all there is to it.” He wrote this about David Duke, "The ex-Klansman David Duke from Metairie in Jefferson Parish had been elected to the Louisiana State House of Representatives and he was being interviewed. He said that welfare wasn't working and that workfare would be better; make people on welfare work for the community instead of getting a free ride. He also wanted to put prisoners from state pens on work programs. Didn't want them getting a free ride, either. I hadn't seen Duke before; he looked like a movie star.”

Bob Dylan came to New York City circa 1961. At that time the Communist Party USA was the most influential socialist grouping in the United States. Dylan was always an anti-Communist however DYLAN USED THE CPUSA IN HIS RISE TO FAME just as the CP used folk music to further its ends, a relationship that Dylan wrote about in Highway 61 Revisited.
HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED 1965
Well Georgia Sam he had a bloody nose
Welfare Department they wouldn't give him no clothes
He asked poor Howard where can I go
Howard said there's only one place I know
Sam said tell me quick man I got to run
Ol' Howard just pointed with his gun
And said that way down on Highway 61.
"Well Georgia Sam” Georgia Sam - the Communist Party USA controlled by the Soviet Union. “Georgia” is the Republic of Georgia then under Soviet rule. Dylan’s Wanted Man, "I might be in Colorado or Georgia by the sea” the American State of Georgia is landlocked “Working for some man who may not know at all who I might be” working for the Communists who think I am one of them “If you ever see me comin' and if you know who I am / Don't you breathe it to nobody 'cause you know I'm on the lam" I am trying to escape from these people and escape through drugs at the same time. Dylan also used “Georgia” to refer to Soviet Communism in Poor Boy, "Time and love” the zeitgeist of the 1960's and the desires of the music fans “has branded” placed me in a distinctive category; a particular kind: a brand of folk music that I do not care for. Also given me a mark of disgrace or notoriety; a stigma “me with its claws” and caused me to achieve something only after overcoming great difficulties: I had to claw my way to fame and wealth “Had to go to Florida” Dylan had to retire from folk music: In Tweeter and the Monkey Man, “I guess I'll go to Florida and get myself some sun / ain’t no opportunity here / Everything’s been done” “dodgin' them Georgia laws” to get away from that old left communism “Poor boy in the hotel” L’Hotel De Ville – City Hall “called the Palace of Bloom” Dylan the folksinger in his political phase when his talent was just starting to bloom. “Called down to room service” condescended to call upon a government branch or department and its employees in the case a branch of the Kremlin operating in the United States “said 'send up a room’” supply me with a venue “Poor boy” as folksinger: Tonight I Will Be Staying Here With You “If there's a poor boy on the street” a folksinger in Greenwich Village, street: an area of a city e.g. Wall Street “Then let him have my seat” position of prominence “'Cause tonight I'll be staying here with you” because presently I intend to devote my time to getting high.
So “Georgia Sam,” the Communist Party USA had a bloody nose - idiomatic expression – they were defeated or damaged but not permanently or seriously by McCarthyism “Welfare Department” the liberals “they wouldn't give him no clothes” they would not let Communists express themselves in words that clothed their true totalitarian intentions “He asked poor Howard” the Communists asked a folksinger - poor Howard “where can I go? “Howard said there's only one place I know” the folksinger responded that there is only one outlet that entertained Communist thought. “Sam said tell me quick man I got to run” run for office, take over America “Ol' Howard just pointed” wrote a song direct and obvious in meaning or reference; often unpleasant; "a pointed critique" "a protest song" “with his gun” acoustic guitar “And said that way down on Highway 61.” Howard said infiltrate the world of folk music and you will receive acceptance in the media. “Gun” as guitar: In Baby Blue Dylan told his former folk fans, “Yonder stands your orphan with his gun / Crying like a fire in the sun” and Dylan chose the song Take A Message To Mary because it fit well into his poetic symbolism as a message to his old folk fans “Take a message” message song “to Mary / But don't tell her what I've done” don’t tell her I switched to rock and roll “Please, don't mention the stage coach” the voice lessons “And the shot from a carried gun” and the sound of an electric guitar...Tell her I had to change my tune” switch to rock and roll “and cancel out our wedding day” and that I am no longer wedded to leftist ideology “but please don’t mention the lonely cell” sarcastic: Communist Party Cell “where I’m gonna pine away” sarcastic: where I am going to languish with desire; to waste away with longing for folk music and communism “until my dying day” which would have been soon if I would have remained a Commie folk musician.
