Just Kill Time
posted Nov 20 2009 by bahadir7

I wanted to write something in English (I'm from Turkey and in Turkey, eighteen-years-old-students -just like me- can't speak English well, can't write even an original sentence, if they are not educated in famous highschools or did not come from an English-language-country like Australia; so I'm trying to build up my English); I want to write something about Mr. Dylan since I knew him and I decided to list his albums worst to best, though I know hard to compare those much albums and insane, to list albums worst to best. But he built my music joy with R.E.M. and after them, I learned what nice music is - for me, my way; so I will list his albums; it's only personal - you know, you don't have to agree with me. (In my early-music-years I listen, more often than not, Turkish folk music, pop/rock musicians from my country - rarely English-language-music but not the ones like Dylan or Neil Young; maybe some musicians that I have known as a rock musician, like Bryan Adams; and musicians that I guessed are making melancholic music, like Whitney Houston - disgusting things. I heard Dylan's name first in a radio show as a rock music legend and I thought he was dead. But sought about him and I met "Like A Rolling Stone" and I understood what this song was saying. And I became a Dylan fan. And R.E.M. - one of my friends offered me "Losing My Religion" and I found myself among U2, Rolling Stones, etc. Then then then: Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Joanna Newsom, Jack White, Belle & Sebastian, Pavement etc...)

Here's my list.

34. "Down in the Groove", 1988

Though "Silvio".

33. "Knocked Out Loaded", 1986

Though "Brownsville Girl". It's a wonderful poem.

32. "Under the Red Sky", 1990

Outtakes from "Oh Mercy" are nice.

31. "Shot of Love", 1981

Though another great poem, "Every Grain of Sand".

30. "Christmas in the Heart", 2009

29. "Slow Train Coming", 1979

28. "Saved", 1980

27. "Bob Dylan", 1962

I'd not wanted to this album 27th. His vocal was pre-Björk-Björk-esque.

26. "Good As I Been To You", 1992

25. "World Gone Wrong", 1993

24. "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid", 1973

23. "Planet Waves", 1974

22. "Dylan", 1973

It's not his worst. A good cover album I think.

21. "Self Portrait", 1970

20. "Nashville Skyline", 1969

19. "Desire", 1976

"Romance in Durango" and "Black Diamond Bay", I love. Violin is soulful.

18. "Empire Burlesque", 1985

"Clean-cut Kid" and "Dark Eyes" are unbelievable.

17. "Infidels", 1983

"Jokerman" is one of the best songs ever.

16. "The Times They're A-Changin'", 1964

15. "Another Side of Bob Dylan", 1964

"To Ramona" is awesome.

14. "Together Through Life", 2009

13. "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan", 1963

"Girl From the North Country Fair", "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall", "Don't Think Twice..." They're wonderful.

12. "Street Legal", 1978

I think this LP is underrated. All songs have an amazing poetry powerty and strange but nice melodies; and back-vocals are good, too.

11. "Oh Mercy", 1989

Good poetry but most, Daniel Lanois.

10. "Time out of Mind", 1997

The darkest album ever. Desolated lyrics and dark guitar, piano.

9. "The Basement Tapes", 1975

Birth of Baroque Pop - good, very good songs.

8. "New Morning", 1970

Pretty pretty songs; nice vocal and piano. "Winterlude" and "If Dogs Run Free" are amazing. Coen Bros. They made me love this album so much. ("The Big Lebowski" :) )

7. "Modern Times", 2006

Amazing references: Alicia Keys to Henry Timrod. Great Blues music; but especially "Ain't Talkin'" - my God!

6. "Blonde on Blonde", 1966

Surrealist, Symbolist, humoural, desolated, funny love songs are all in this album. One of the greatest poems ever: "Sad-eyed Lady of The Lowlands"; one of the greatest songs ever: "Visions of Johanna"; and a mad portrait of USA: "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again".

5. "Bringing It All Back Home", 1965

All among powerful rock songs and great blues melodies, sometimes Rimbaud-esque lyrics ("Mr. Tambourine Man"), sometimes funny games ("Outlaw Blues", "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"). Why is he a rock legend? Listen.

4. "Blood on The Tracks", 1975

This album has an amazing reality. "Idiot Wind" and "Lily, Rosemary & Jack of Hearts" are two of his greatest tales. "Buckets of Rain" has a simple but very strong melody.

3. "Highway 61 Revisited", 1965

Most melancholic album in the universe with "The Queen is Dead" of The Smiths. My favourite is "Queen Jane Approximately" - amazing lyrics.

2. "John Wesley Harding", 1967

The end of golden age with alegoric, wisely lyrics and simple but nice melodies. It's the best of his golden age.

1. "Love & Theft", 2001

Why do you expect from a music album? Melancholy? Yes, there's. Good lyrics? Yes, there's. Messages in lyrics? Yes, there's. Fun? Yes, there's. Wisdom? Not too much but there's even wisdom. Humour? Not too much, but there's even humour. Amazing references to literature history. It's the best for me.
