Don't think twice, Bob's alright
Bob Dylan performs at Convention Hall in Asbury Park
By Mark Voger, STAFF WRITER • August 15, 2008

It sounded historic, and it was: Bob Dylan at Convention Hall in Asbury Park.
Backed by a game and talented five-piece band, Dylan, 67, played for a little over two hours to a sold-out house on this comfortable evening. The Conventional Hall floor was packed with general-admission ticketholders.

Dylan's gorgeous 15-song set favored his later albums, especially "Modern Times," but there were just enough key classics to keep throwbacks and neophytes happy.

Wearing a dark brimmed hat and jacket, Dylan rarely ventured out from behind his keyboard. His band included a pedal steel player who switched off on violin and a bassist who occasionally trotted out an upright bass. The boys seemed to be intentionally styled in matching grey suits and hats.

True to Dylan's apparently reclusive nature, there were no song introductions, and the stage went black between every song. Dylan played four harmonica solos, and his shimmying organ could occasionally be heard in the mix.

Dylan's first four songs set the tone for the evening: two classics and two from "Modern Times." He opened with good old "Rainy Day Women #12 and 35" (better known, if mistakenly, as "Everybody Must Get Stoned"), "It Ain't Me, Babe," "Rollin' and Tumblin' " and "Spirit on the Water."

Dylan kicked off his three-song encore with the show's highlight, "Like a Rolling Stone." Can't you just hear the audience doing a big sing on the refrain, "How does it feel?"

Dylan finally loosened up a bit during the encore, waving, however wanly, to the audience and introducing his band. Dylan's closer was his 1963 career-igniter, "Blowin' in the Wind."
......

Also performed were "Tryin' to Get to Heaven," "Honest With Me," "Tangled Up in Blue," "Beyond the Horizon," "Highway 61 Revisited," "Nettie Moore" and "Summer Days."
