Let's hear Oxford Town ... posted Jan 27 2010 by Canute

Bob's songs are great ... no doubt about that, I'd say ... great, but .... and there has to be a but, I'm afraid ... but are they Really Great ... like Great Balls of Fire, Blueberry Hill, Blue Suede Shoes, Wake Up Little Suzie, Summertime Blues ... you will see the era that I am picking for Great Songs. Those songs are heard still today wherever you turn to listen to music ... but Bob's? Not so sure he is getting the coverage he and people like me would like to see. So, what's to be done, then? Bob's gotta write something lasting and lurvacious. Something with a great beat, good lyrics and great playing ... maybe even in mono. Forgot this new digital stuff, which he doesn't seem to like anyway... So, c'mon Bob get with it again. Ps ... he's going to be singing at the White House at a major civil rights event ... what do we want to hear. Summer Days? No, I hope not ... Masters of War?Maybe, but Obama probably wouldn't be keen on that. The Times They Are A-Chanin'? No, they've changed for the worse and he's told us that several times. Blowin' in the Wind? No ... best show a film of Peter, Paul and Mary rendering that one. No, my choice is short and straightforward: Oxford Town.. That was chilling and frightening when I first heard it, and years later I got to hear John Hammond ask Bob as he finished his take in the studio: Don't tell me, that's all!? But it was all there was ... short and straight. It told the truth; there was no straining to understand what that song was about ... we knew right away. Civil rights. Bigotry. That's my choice. Ps ... the picture is Bob visiting sick children in a Belfast hospital in 2004
