Love Minus Thunder #2 (or something like that)
posted Nov 7 2008 by Dave

Made the trek to Milwaukee last night. It was kind of Bizarro World Bob. It was sort of like they were trying to get some type of swing or big band feel going.

Highway 61 blistered, but for the most part the arrangements were not like that. Stu played more electric guitar and had more solos last night, and Bob's keyboard was turned up on some of the jams. The guitars were all on the same side of the stage this time, opposite the keyboard.

Bob donned a white hat last night, by the way. Plain backdrop except for Girl of the North Country, and the Camera's Eye for the encores.

Bob took center stage at least twice to sing without any instrument, including Workingman's Blues. I have not seen him in front of the mic like that in the prior 25 shows I attended. I would say that song was one of the highlights for me. He also let the audience sing the refrain to Just Like a Woman on the first two verses, another first for me. Also, I don't believe I've heard one of my all-timers, Love Minus Zero, live until last night.

Normally, I could do without Tweedle Dee, but I have to say, I liked it last night. Sort of a Texas feel.

It was just a real strange show. Very hard to describe. A real interesting version of Hard Rain. Bob voice played off the crescendos of the music in a very unique style. I thought his singing itself was OK, but it seemed turned down in the mix or muddied at times on several of the songs.

No guitar, but a lot of harp. A few solos, but a lot the playing was accentuating the other stuff that was going on.

I thought the bass was turned up too high on some songs, and although you can't go wrong with Tangled, I would say I've heard versions I like better.

Overall, great time and great set list.
