What is it about misery? posted Jan 11 2009 by javalogy
It seems strange to me, how often misery/sorrow is equated with beauty. Is it because such impressions often make us want to be of help? Get the sense that we are "needed" going? No, I'm not saying that everyone that is in a state of misery is attractive, but if you look through popular magazines, or watch music videos, it always seems like the expression of choice is looking like one is in pain, angry, and/or has the flu. What's up with that? It's kinda like the network news; one hardly ever hears anything "happy" reported. Maybe the world is full of adrenaline junkies, and the thought that we might have to fight or take flight or help somebody else do the same makes us all giddy. I say "us" in a myself pretty much excluded way. I don't know, maybe somebody out there reading this loathes conflict as much as I do. Unfortunately, I don't like being told what to do, and therein lies the rub. Just how do you "get on" with others and not have to tolerate all the discord? I wanna win the lottery and live someplace with a view of the ocean. Someplace with no phones, and lots of books and records. And movies. From a wide range of genres. NO computers! Big card catalog might be nice, though.
Don't worry, it's doubtless just a passing fancy. I'll get over it. Pre-term jitters.
