Have you ever seen a girl so beautiful that you don't believe she was born in a hospital?

She must have come into this world on a brass bed in the second floor of a farm house. A doctor with sleeves rolled up to his elbow, oil lamps flicker on the night stand and vanity, her father paces across the parlor floor and she arrives with blonde hair, blue eyes.

I met this girl a couple times as a child. One year she turned 17. Even now, years later, she's still 17. Even with shorter hair and an Arizona tan, she's the girl have not pinned to a Rolling Stones song.

If I owned a chuckwagon, it would be a restaurant - not a dude ranch amenity.

One year my father drove the family to Wyoming for a chuckwagon breakfast. I can not remember the place or the name of the horse I rode, but I do remember the cook sang a few cowboy songs on a damaged small-body guitar. In my memory I picture a few less fence posts and a herd of cattle surrounding the temporary morning campsite.

All the young girls like this remind me of her. She is in and part of the city. Both are part of the modern world that I have no passion to achieve or be part of. I do not reject it. If she walked into my dusty, old America, I would offer her a panama hat and the yellow sundress that blows on the clothesline in an open field.

She is gone. The city is to many miles for me to walk. I have my back to the east. I don't look back. Yet, pictures, like B. Davidson's, reminds me of her.

A door-to-door salesman does not bother me. I have not seen one stroll through the neighborhood with a briefcase in hand in years. Where did they go? Did they all crash their cars?

I'm sure they did not all sleep with our wives. I'm confident that they did earn money - not enough to support a family and the youngest son's stoned friend that raids the fridge for Jell-o chocolate vanilla swirl cups.

I feel a loss knowing that my kids will not see 'green' pennies. This might be the same loss one might have felt when the wheat penny was discontinued. I have never seen a buffalo nickel.

Back when Lincoln Memorial pennies were made of copper, they would age green. Since 1983, it has moved from 95% copper to 97.5 zinc (with a copper coat). It doesn't age like the copper penny, it doesn't sound like a copper penny when it falls out of your pocket, it doesn't taste like a copper penny... and copper tastes terrible.

Photos are ghosts. How can I grab a ghost by the bowtie and dangle ‘em on my wall?
