Le meurtre en 1963 de Medgar Evers, leader noir du Missouri, fut un choc pour la nation. Dylan utilise le meurtre pour montrer les racines du mal.
Confusion entre les victimes et celui qui fait les victimes: "Le pauvre blanc sert d’outil entre leurs mains".
Dans le racisme du Sud de l’époque, le "diviser pour régner" a maintenu le Blanc et le Noir dans le même dénuement.

L'album du retour aux sources, Dylan avec sa guitare et son harmonica se souvient de ses débuts. Il y a trente ans, sur son premier album, il chantait "Hard Times in New-York". Il ne veut plus revivre cette époque, il ne veut plus pleurer sur ses amours d'antan. Mais la chanson traîne toujours dans nos oreilles, et il y a toujours des pauvres, et des souvenirs...
