Bob contends in "Dont Look Back" that he is a good singer. I agree, Bob is. And the others...
Roy Orbison could sing Camptown Races and it would probably sound beautiful. He is the prefect example of a good singer.
Janis Joplin- my mom can't stand that sound. However, Janis too is a good singer. But unlike Roy, it is not the sound of the vocal, but the way she sings it.
Sir Paul I must admit is both good with vocals alone and the way in which he sings. "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" on Anthology 3 shows the flexibility (all in one song) of what he can do.
Tim Curry...a great actor, but his vocals are just as great. A perhaps lesser known than the others, but just the same a "good singer." Here is a great number from a live concert in the 70's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLKq2GmD6B8
Jeff Lynne from ELO, another really great vocalist. You look at him, and then you listen to him, and you kind of have to wonder about the sweet voice coming out of the funny man.
Marty Robbins, old country; pure quality sound.
Louis Armstrong, often imitated by others. Here I think it goes back in part to the way the songs are sung. It is not so much the rough and ready voice, but the force behind it.
And I could go on and on...
