The Eye

Hi Sadi,
Thanks for your excellent take on The Eye. I for one have wondered about its meaning, and your thoughts and ideas seem as good as any other - better than most I suspect. Surely better than my own "What is that thing?" The Eye seems to be wearing a crown, too. Hmmm.......... OK I suppose.

I appreciate your contributions to this board and this community - makes it a nice place to frequent. ;-)

luis...

I'm glad you found this... I think I said all I had to say above... and glad it make some sense to you : )

I know for me, as maybe I wrote (i don't recall now) that certain words reappear in my poetry often - wafer, marbled, cousin, etc. Just strange words, Kindred is another. I didn't even realize it. And the thing with Eyes featuring in so many of Dylan's songs may not even have had any conscious meaning to him - by which i mean, he may not have realized it, i don't know. Who knows, right? But it was an interesting thing to think about. I wonder who drew it? I have some ideas... but I could be dead wrong. Either way, it's great.

oops, posted twice!

the artist view ?

I admit I had never asked myself the question of the eye, even if I have seen it a few times in Dylan concerts and, why not, in one of those t-shirts I got after a concert in London (those who have bought a Dylan t-shirt, raise your hands!). I probably looked at it as a curiosity, a sort of visual catch, very much like the famous lips and tongue of the Stones. But coming from Dylan it probably has some kind of meaning. Reading you, I found myself remembering these lines from "Sugar Baby": "I got my back to the sun 'cause the light is too intense / I can see what everybody in the world is up against" and thought that those lines might somehow be connected to the idea of the "artist view" on that symbol. However, as you imply, the simplicity or complexity of the idea behind it, we can only guess. Salut!
