This song reminds me of Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story, "Rappaccini's Daughter." I can picture Giovanni singing this as he walks through the "mystic garden." Signor Giacomo Rappaccini seems to have an 'evil spirit dwelling in his heart' as he cultivates the poison flowers that wither all those to come in contact with the plant.
