Such a great timepiece!!!

The first of it's kind. It builds on the tradition of GHV 2 and improves it vastly. Just a great compliation album.

Lay Down Your Weary Tune

Dylan has many songs concerning weariness. I understand this. His outlet was “the strength of strings.” I’m glad he found this outlet, so we all have his great music.

Caribbean Wind

Yeh, I love that whole area of Dylan's work, with a full 70s kinda rock band, and Caribbean Wind is a standout gem from his unreleased stuff for me. I only heard this last year for the first time - between songs like this, ENTIRE ALBUMS that I missed somehow over the decades, and his last four fantastic studio releases, I've been immersed in new Dylan for easily 5 years and counting!

It's madness - who even comes close to this guy? And I don't mean that rhetorically - I've been listening to so much Dylan for so long I'm starting to feel guilty about it! Ha ha!

Maybe I should take a break, listen to a Wilbury's record or something...

SLUMDOG
I first got this on vinyl in 1989 round about the time I started getting into Dylan.
The best compilation I have ever heard.
I own the CD too.
Can't praise it higher.

This compilation was the first time I got in touch with Dylan's music. My dad was a DeadHead and I had only heard the things he had done with the Dead until I got hold of these and fell in love with Bob Dylan. Of course, from then on I heard pretty much everything else but what a way to start.

And this compilation? Well, I love it all, all the songs, every second of it and all the memories it has brought me in these last 10 years (and I'm only 20, now.). Awesome!

Abandoned Love

I can't really rate this ENTIRE album because I don't have it. Though, I do own most of the songs. From the looks of it this seems to be a greatest hits album with some girth and genuine feeling behind it.

Anyway, the highlight for me is Abandoned Love. The melody is perfect and Dylan seems so candid. The sound quality and the way it's played makes it sound like something from an early bootleg. And Dylan himself seems so... I'm not sure. It's something you really don't hear from him again.

My First Dylan Compilation

I first bought this album in 1985 on vinyl when it was first released. I now have it on CD. I had not collected all of Dylan's albums at that time, and it was this album that was the catalyst for my collection frenzy.

There are of course, some excellent outtakes here, such as "Lay Down Your Weary Tune" and "Percy's Song" from the Times/Changin' sessions, "Up To Me" from Blood On The Tracks sessions, "Abandoned Love" from the Desire sessions, and "Caribbean Wind" from the Shot of Love sessions.

Most of the tracks, however, are available on other albums. There's a live version of "Heart Of Mine" but the album version is better. There is also a demo version of "Forever Young," but not really worth a listen here.

There are some other unreleased songs, such as "Baby, I'm In The Mood For You," "I Wanna Be Your Lover," "I'll Keep It With Mine," "Mixed-Up Confusion," and "Quinn The Eskimo" (From the Basement Tapes sessions).

My favorite tracks here are the live versions of "Visions Of Johanna" and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" from 1966, but similar performances of these are available on the Live 1966 Bootleg album.

All-in all, if you are a Dylan completist, then this is a must-have.

This is the best one for starters - making all "Greatest Hits" sets redundant. Because of the abundant unreleased material it is also a must for all fans. I especially love the alternative versions of Bloos on the tracks - together with the ones on Bootleg Series 1-3 they make a fantastic alternative album....

Dylan gets the box

For anyone who doesn;t want to tread the waters of alot of hit-or-miss Dylan, but does want more than just the hits, then this set is for you. For die-hards, there's some bait including some tracks unavailable elsewhere. You can't argue with such a solid set of songs.
